On Tuesday 15th March 2022 we presented our second Young Good Citizen award for this Rotary year to Aaron Daley at a Duke of Edinburgh training session with a good attendance of candidates at the Horbury Academy where they meet each week.

Aaron was nominated to receive the award for going above and beyond what is expected of him as a volunteer with the Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project and leading Duke of Edinburgh training sessions. After the award had been presented, I learned that Aaron saved the life of a young lady who was about to jump off a bridge. He held on to her to prevent her falling while calling the emergency services which saved her life.

Aaron has been involved with the Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project as a young person, progressing through Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions and serving the project as a volunteer.

Aaron came up with ideas to solve the many problems with delivering the Duke of Edinburgh award program during the Covid-19 pandemic, one of which was to develop an online database system for delivering training during the lockdowns.

This is only a snippet of the content in the nomination but enough to demonstrate that Aaron is a worthy recipient of our award and demonstration of our “Service above Self” principles within Rotary.

Congratulations Aaron!
