Rotary Young Good Citizen 2022 - Aaron Daley

On Tuesday 15th March 2022 we presented our second Young Good Citizen award for this Rotary year to Aaron Daley at a Duke of Edinburgh training session with a good attendance of candidates at the Horbury Academy where they meet each week.
Aaron was nominated to receive the award for going above and beyond what is expected of him as a volunteer with the Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project and leading Duke of Edinburgh training sessions. After the award had been presented, I learned that Aaron saved the life of a young lady who was about to jump off a bridge. He held on to her to prevent her falling while calling the emergency services which saved her life.
Aaron has been involved with the Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project as a young person, progressing through Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions and serving the project as a volunteer.
Aaron came up with ideas to solve the many problems with delivering the Duke of Edinburgh award program during the Covid-19 pandemic, one of which was to develop an online database system for delivering training during the lockdowns.
This is only a snippet of the content in the nomination but enough to demonstrate that Aaron is a worthy recipient of our award and demonstration of our “Service above Self” principles within Rotary.

Bids Welcome for Phoenix Rotary Charity Money
Christmas 2021 saw Horbury and Ossett Phoenix Rotary Club back on the streets of Horbury and at Morrisons on Dewsbury Road, Wakefield, with Santa and his sleigh. Their efforts, and a generous community, helped raise over £3000 for good causes which is now in the Club’s Charitable Trust Fund along with donations from club members, and is available for bids for funding from individuals, community, charitable, youth, and sporting organisations within Horbury, Ossett and surrounding areas.
Rotary Club President Bob Trout when launching the appeal said," We raise our funds in the local community and it is right that the vast majority is returned to good causes within the same community. Many groups, charities, and clubs are struggling to fund their re starts after the lockdown and we hope they will come forward with their bids and help spread the benefit as widely as possible. We are limiting bids to £200 each and they will be considered on their merits including the benefit to our communities.”
In previous years awards have been made to a wide variety of good causes across the district including Wakefield Metropolitan District and bordering areas of South Kirklees. They have included kit for youth sports teams, musical instruments for bands, support groups for the elderly, school facilities, equipment for brownie packs, youth clubs and equipment for individuals with very specific needs.

On Monday night, 24th January 2022, our President Bob Trout, our Youth Committee Chair Person Paul Helliwell and Stephen Brook our Community Service Committee Chair, presented the first of our Young Good Citizens Awards this year to Megan Rodd and what a very worthy recipient she is.
Megan is 14 years old and a leader at Rainbows, which is a section of the Guides movement for the very junior members. We presented her with her award at the Ossett Christ Church Community Hall, during a Rainbows meeting. She was unaware that she was to be given the Award until we presented it to her with her Mum, the Rainbows members and their other Guide Leaders present.

After a busy 9 days in the company of Santa and his Sleigh the Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix is pleased to report that generous donations of the public through our bucket collections raised over £3000.
Those moneys have been placed into our charitable Trust Fund and will be distributed to deserving causes over the next few months.
We are grateful to all who contributed and hope the sight of Santa back on our streets and outside Morrisons supermarket is an indicator of a return to normality.

On 27th October 2021 three members of The Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix presented Ken Sugden and Arthur Lumb with the Club's Good Citizen Awards
Ken Sugden and Arthur Lumb have been active members of the Safe Anchor Trust for many years as well as a host of other voluntary organisations, mainly Horbury based, including The Horbury Pageant Players. Ken and Arthur's work on the canals involves maintenance and improvements such as tow path repairs, bulb planting, installation of bird and bat boxes and making and installing new benches.
Their long standing commitment in all weathers sets an exemplary example to everyone who puts service above self and the proceeds of their work is enjoyed by the residents and visitors to Horbury for many years.
Thank you to both Ken and Arthur.
