The Royal British Legion, Horbury Ossett and Sitlington Branch, in partnership with The Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix and The Senior Citizens Support Group Horbury would like to engage with the people of Horbury, Ossett and Sitlington and other local areas to make this years activities of remembrance truly remarkable in our community.

  • The historical significance of 2018 is of great importance, as it marks the centenary of the end of the Great War (1914-18) during which so many lost their lives.
  • Whilst it has often been referred to as ‘The War to End All Wars’ it was sadly not to be. Many of our brave servicemen and women have been lost since, in the service of our country and they too deserve our thoughts and prayers.
  • We would like to reflect upon the history of the fallen of our surrounding districts and your help with this will be invaluable. Many local people have their roots in the area and hopefully will still have photographs of their respective ancestors and family members who may have been lost during the Great War or since.
  • We feel it appropriate to remember them by acknowledging not only their names and respective roles and regiments, but aspects of their family, where they lived and what they did in civilian life before going to war.
  • We also recognise that many women and men assisted the war effort and are similarly deserving of our recognition and remembrance.
  • If you have any aspects of this family history (and photographs of them if at all possible) we would love to hear from you. One of many ideas in marking the significance of this year is to display a potted history of each person or persons in the front windows of any houses that were built before 1914-18 where they lived. Where their former residence no longer exists, we would ask businesses and shops to help by allowing us to display the same in their windows.
  • This is only one of many ideas and we would be delighted if you were able to give us your own thoughts and ideas to help. We hope that this year will not only offer our respectful reflection and remembrance, but also celebrate the 100thanniversary of the end of that terrible war.
