About Defibrillators:

Defibrillators are used to stabilise the heartbeat of people suffering a heart attack. They are most effective when used as soon as possible after a heart attack has started – the quicker the better. They can be used by untrained members of the public following a 999 call and simple instructions from the automated devices.

Of the sudden cardiac arrest deaths that occur each year, 90-95% of the victims die before they reach hospital. If a defibrillator is used within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, survival rates jump from 5-10% to 74%. Every minute lost reduces the chance of survival by 10%. The proximity of a defibrillator is therefore an important element in improving chances of survival.
