The District 1040 Environmental Award was presented to The Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix by Past District Governor Nigel Arthurs at the Club’s meeting on Thursday 7th November 2019.
The Shield is awarded annually to the winning Club that has demonstrated effective and beneficial outcomes with projects that involve service to the community, international aid and sustainability.
PDG Nigel said that the evaluation of applications took into consideration the carbon footprint of projects, new concepts and innovation, community impact and enabling the public to enjoy outcomes, personal involvement by Rotarians, preservation of biodiversity and the adoptable replication of ideas.
The award was presented to President Phil Johnson (pictured) who received it on behalf of Rotarian Nick Bardsley (Community and Vocational Chairman) and The Phoenix Rotary Club.

The Club, partners and friends had a wonderful evening on Thursday 24th October 2019 at Wakefield Colleges Gaskell's Restaurant, which is operated by the Hospitality & Catering Students from Wakefield College, and provides some of the best value for money delicacies in Wakefield! As usual the fine dining was of very high standard in terms of food, presentation and service.
Congratulations to the Students and their Tutors.

World Polio Day
During our evening at Gaskell's we held a raffle in support of the "Global Polio Eradication Initiative" which is organised by Rotary International and other organisations. This initiative was launched more than 30 years ago and at that point, polio paralysed 1,000 children every day! We’ve made great progress against the disease since then. Polio cases have dropped by 99.9%, from 350,000 cases in 1988 in 125 countries to 33 cases of Wild Poliovirus in 2018 in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. And we remain committed to the end. With polio nearly eradicated, Rotary and it's partners must sustain this progress.
Rotary is committed to the absolute eradication of polio in all its forms. Towards this goal our Gaskell's raffle raised £128. Not much you might think, but we will apply to the Bill Gates Foundation, who have pledged to match Rotary fundraising for polio eradication by 2 to 1. So our £128 will increase to £384 and that will mean almost 500 more individual polio vaccinations.

Most Rotary Clubs have a new President every Year (Rotary Year is July to June). The President Elect is next year's President and the Vice President is President the year after.
Here is our current Presidential Lineup:
Left: President Elect Robert Trout. Centre: President Steve Driver. Right: Vice President Barry Blakemore.

July 2019... Yet another bench was replaced this week in Horbury, courtesy of The Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix.
The bench was installed by our Immediate Past President Alan Hudders, Past President Mick Miller, Phoenix member Stuart Wilby and Roger Parkinson PHF. Roger gives a great deal of time as a local Woodland Creation Champion and Volunteer Speaker for the Woodland Trust, as well as through his leading role for Wakefield Tree Wardens Charter Branch. As if that wasn't enough he also is a great friend of Phoenix Rotary and regular volunteer on our local projects. This skillful team spent hours overcoming some technical difficulties in site preparation and previously team member Stuart welded extra steel tube to the legs of the refurbished bench to bring the seat height up to the new regulation height.
The bench is now fully installed and in use in the grassed area at the junction of Quarry Hill and Horbury Bypass.
Well done all and a lovely job it is too:
