Ossett Academy win a great debate...

Thursday 9th February saw a lively 3 cornered debate between teams of 4 young people from Ossett Academy, Horbury Academy, and the Horbury Breakthrough Youth Group, on the subject of Obesity and who is responsible for the growth of the problem in recent years. All three teams produced well researched arguments which they presented clearly and convincingly whilst engaging with their audience, members of the Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix.

The debate was organised by the Rotary Club with the winning team awarded The George Owen Trophy in memory of the late George Owen a former member of the club. Three judges adjudicated and had a very difficult job in determining which team won the debate. Chairman of the Judges Rotarian Julian Carter commented that it was a very close victory for the Ossett Academy team over both of the Horbury teams which were only a few marks behind them.

Rotary Club President Elect Neil Kirkham presented the trophy to Ossett and said, "All three teams are to be congratulated on what was the best and closest debate the club had witnessed in the 16 years that the competition has been running."
