The evening of Thursday October the 10th 2013 saw the Club celebrate their Good Citizens Awards, recognising the long term work and community service of five local people who have given of their time to help the young people of the area. Recognition of good work in and for the Community is something that is very important to the Phoenix Rotary Club and this year's recipients very much deserve recognition.

The Recipients of the 2013 Phoenix Good Citizen Awards were:

Stephen Spurr, (who had been nominated by the late Jeff Small, member of Phoenix Rotary) received his award for his work with St Ignatious Football Club for over 47 years and counting. He has given the opportunity to local children to hone their footballing skills and in some cases eventually manage and coach junior teams.

Janet Goodhead and Christine Robinson, for notching up nearly 100 years between them for services to the Guiding and Brownie Organisations,  based at the 4th Wakefield Brownies, Calder Grove. Guiding for Janet and Christine has become a "way of life" for them, seeing and helping young girls develop friendships, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.

Ted and Joan Fawcett for working with, and for, the very successful and active 8th Wakefield Horbury Bridge Scout Group for over 50 years. They have given their spare time willingly to the development of children aged 6 to 14 years, in the Horbury area, arranging camps, activities and events, as well as their regular scout hut weekly meetings. Ted is still very active in Scouting as he currently holds the position of District Secretary for Wakefield. Joan is a very avid gardner and lends this skill to nurturing verges and hedgerows in Horbury and Horbury Bridge.

A good evening was had by all and the Club owes a debt of gratitude to our Community Service Committee and particularly Michael Robb who has worked very hard in leading the organisation of this event....Thank you Michael
